Many a people have to be assured that ordinary winter influenza and the bird flu are two different viruses. Influenza, though a contagious viral disease can be treated by vaccines and antibiotics. Bird flu, however, is passed from birds to birds and rarely to humans. Countries with cases of bird flu infection in humans reportedly have been Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Mr Masood Khawaja, president of Halal Food Authority said that Turkey, Romania and now a EU member country Greece have found migratory birds, like geese, swans and ducks with infection. However, local veterinary services are doing their utmost to exterminate affected birds and impede spread of flu pandemic. The European Commission has already imposed ban on imports of poultry and poultry feathers from some countries.
Authorities are advising vigilance and we should have no reason to be apprehensive
about consuming poultry or poultry products at present. Halal Food Authority
advice to Muslims is to enjoy the feasts of Ramadan procured by partial chicken
recipes. HFA is positive that the Department of Environment, Food and Rural
Affairs, the Chief Medical Officer and the Chief Veterinary Officer would
be flat out to address this deadly issue as shown efficaciously in tackling
recent foot and mouth epidemic.
